ORCHIDS sold out in 2017 ! Book now to experience this spellbinding show's return season.

ORCHIDS divulges the secrets of feminine magic and lost ritualistic practices, in a spellbinding performance from seven women spanning three generations – including 9-year-old Ivy Foster, and former LIMBS dancer, Marianne Schultz, entrancing in her 60s.

The world of ORCHIDS evokes mothers, sisters, witches, sirens, goddesses and other-worldly creatures. Together, they unravel an entrancing mythological realm that demystifies the complex female spirit, bringing women out of darkness and into the light.

Choreographic Director Sarah Foster Sproull is at the top of her game in the world of dance. She was awarded the largest choreographic award available in New Zealand - Creative New Zealand’s Choreographic Fellowship - for 2017-2019, which saw her creating new work and collaborating with artists and companies from Fiji, Scotland and The United States of America. In 2015, she was one of the five artists selected internationally by renowned Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite to participate in the Craft of Embodiment workshop in Banff. At home, Sproull has recently done some high-profile work with the Royal NZ Ballet, choreographing Artemis Rising as the final performance of retiring principal dancer, Abigail Boyle, and Despite The Loss of Small Detail, for the Strength and Grace 2018 suffragette season.

For ORCHIDS, Foster-Sproull has connected some of New Zealand’s most intriguing artists and designers including composer Eden Mulholland, set designer/dramaturgy Andrew Foster and lighting designer Jennifer Lal. Together, they reveal an entrancing metaphysical realm that evokes characters of the occult and uncovers the complex female spirit: Women as mothers, witches, sirens and lovers; beasts, deities and otherworldly creatures, bearing an inherent link to the divine. ORCHIDS divulge the secrets of feminine magic, exclusive languages, intuitions and lost ritualistic practices, bringing them out of the concealment of darkness and metamorphosing into the ‘light’.
